Arezzo

Arezzo is located in the center-east of Tuscany, it is about 80 km south-east of Florence, at an elevation of 296 meters above sea level. It lies on a hill close to the Appennino Tosco-Romagnolo.

There are many other historical buildings that prove the importance of Arezzo in the centuries. Its origins, as you can see from its architecture, date back to the Etruscans, as it was one of the greatest Etruscan towns. Then it became a strategic Roman city. Nowadays the upper part of the town, however, keeps a remarkable medieval aspect with the Cathedral and the Medici Fortress.

The Gothic Cathedral contains fine works of art among which La Maddalena by Piero della Francesca and the stained-glass windows by Guillame de Marcillat. The central Piazza Grande shows different styles of architecture: the imposing Renaissance Loggiato Vasariano, the Palazzo delle Fraternita dei Laici, a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and the apse of the Pieve di Santa Maria.
The Piazza Grande hosts annually the Giostra del Saracino, a tournament held on the third Sunday of June and the first Sunday of September, and the Antique Fair on the first weekend of every month.

Very many notable people were born in Arezzo, such as Guido d'Arezzo, the inventor of modern music notation, Piero della Francesca, famous painter, Petrarch, the illustrious poet, Pietro Aretino, author, playwright, poet and satirist, Giorno Vasari, the famous biographer but also painter and architect, Michelangelo, the renowned and famous painter and sculptor and many more.

Seeing the Piero della Francesca frescoes, the Legend of the True Cross, is a highlight of a visit to Arezzo. Piero della Francesca was one of the top Renaissance painters and La Leggenda della Vera Croce (Legend of the True Cross) is considered to be his masterpiece and one of the top Renaissance art works in Italy.
