Siena

Siena guide

Once a capital to rival Florence, Siena is Italy's prettiest medieval town, still endowed with the grandeur of the age in which it was at its peak (1260-1348). Draped across three hills, a flamboyant medieval ensemble of palaces and towers, Siena is the perfect counterpart to Florence. Siena is often described as Italy's best preserved medieval city, but while it looks much as it did in the early 14th Century, Siena is no museum.

Don't miss: With its red brick streets and steep alleyways, two breathtaking buildings stand out amongst the others: the stunning black and white striped marble Gothic Cathedral of early Renaissance and the graceful Gothic town hall completed in 1342 Palazzo Pubblico with its Torre del Mangia (102 metres) the bell tower, the second highest medieval tower ever built in Italy. This palace overlooks the magnificent Piazza Del Campo - the loveliest of all Italian squares which is the site of its famous Palio, the bareback horse race that was first recorded in 1283,  on 2nd July and 16th August.

OPEN SPACE “LE GROTTESCHE” Historical Description The Open Space “Le Grottesche” is located on the first floor of the historical residence Palazzo Francesconi, later Coli Bizzarrini. The Palace was built in 1520. The design and the first stages of its construction are attributed to one of the most famous architects of the Renaissance, Baldassarre Peruzzi, whilst the complete realization is due to Pietro Cutaneo, his best pupil. The status of "unfinished" that this building boasts, is an element of uniqueness that makes it special and enigmatic. It is however considered among the notable works of art that adorn the city of Siena. Even the paintings are by tradition attributed to Baldassarre Peruzzi. In the chapel is found the work representing the story of Jonah, whose characters are often used by Peruzzi. The painting "Grottesche" is classical work of Baldassarre’s brush for fine design, simplicity and harmony of invention. It was made in 1527 in memory of Nero Domus Aurea in Roma. In 1906 the Coli Bizzarrini family bought the property and enhanced it through a long and rigorous restoration of magnificent interiors filled with frescoes and precious decorations that covered a period of more than six centuries. Less than 200 meters away is the famous Piazza del Campo, while the building overlooks magnificent "Gardens La Lizza."
